Oakville Symphony Board Director position – Treasurer

Are you passionate about music and finance? Do you possess a keen eye for detail and a desire to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of our community? If so, the Oakville Symphony invites you to apply for the volunteer position of Treasurer on our Board of Directors!

The Oakville Symphony is a not-for-profit community orchestra comprised of 10 professionals and 75 volunteer musicians. Led by our music director and conductor, Lorenzo Guggenheim, the Oakville Symphony is a cornerstone of the Oakville arts scene, performing at the Oakville Centre for Performing Arts, delighting audiences with exceptional performances for over five decades. As we continue our mission to enrich lives through music, we are seeking a dedicated individual to join our Board leadership team and oversee our financial operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the financial affairs of the Oakville Symphony in accordance with best practices and legal requirements.
  • Develop, support, and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with the Board, Music Director and Executive Director.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting to the Board, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
  • Present/summarize relevant financial data monthly in a manner that can be readily interpreted by the board to make strategic decisions.
  • Oversee the preparation of financial statements and tax returns by our accountants.
  • Foster effective working relationships with external service providers (e.g. accounting services, etc.) as required.
  • Provide financial guidance and oversight to the organization’s programs and activities.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, Music Director, and other Board members to support fundraising initiatives and strategic planning.
  • Provide assistance and support with grant applications.
  • Attend committee and board meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Professional accounting designation (e.g., CPA) or equivalent experience in financial management
  • Knowledge of non-profit accounting principles and regulatory compliance
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • General proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Excel
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Oakville Symphony
  • Expected time commitment: 5-10 hours per month (excluding board and committee meetings)

The Board of Directors is committed to supporting the Oakville Symphony through good governance and responsible fiscal management. The Board welcomes applicants of all diverse
backgrounds. Oakville residents are preferred but not required.

Directors are expected to attend at least nine board meetings a year, and participate in committee work related to their skill, experience, and interest. It would be expected that the Treasurer also be the Chair of the Finance Committee. Each board director can serve a maximum of 2 terms being served in succession. We value your passion for the arts and willingness to become an ambassador for the symphony.
