The Elements of Music – Video series for kids

We’re pleased to share a new video series for children, developed and presented by one of our violinists, David Rehner, and funded by the Oakville Community Foundation.

David is highly-qualified when it comes to teaching music to children. He is a music teacher with the Peel District School Board, and music director and conductor of the youth orchestra known as the Rosebud Orchestra which is associated with the Rose Orchestra in Brampton where David is concertmaster.

David dabbled in video editing years ago, but when Covid hit, he ramped up his skills (and upgraded his computer!), and is now the Oakville Symphony’s go-to person for the digital presentations we’ve been able to make this season, including the Virtual Recital Series.

There are five videos in the Elements of Music series, based on the elementary school curriculum. It covers Rhythm, Pitch, Tone Colour, Structure and Dynamics.

David has a great sense of humour and approachable manner which makes for enjoyable and easily-understood presentations. He collaborated on this project with Oakville Symphony ED Bianca Chambers who is a piano teacher. And of course the videos feature a number of our musicians and a few cameos by OS Conductor Roberto De Clara. Our thanks to Máté Szigeti (flute), Nancy Nelson (oboe), Heath Allen (horn), Jose Shapero (cello), Tim Fitzgerald (bass) and Lorne Grossman (percussion).

The Elements of Music series was developed along with other videos for kids, as part of the Oakville Community Foundation’s Community Classroom Online program.
